About SCFTS: Our Company History

Setting the Stage

In response to the opportunities in the field service market, SCFTS was founded to provide superior technical and field service support to energy companies in California.

SCFTS opened its first facility in Lakewood, CA in 1999 to meet the growing need of the Oil & Gas industry to respond to increasingly restrictive fugitive emission standards enacted by the California Air Quality Management Districts. In addition, SCFTS also focuses on optimizing the performance of the vapor control system and equipment.

Beginning with a core of service technicians trained to build vapor relief and control valves at the factory, SCFTS earned a wide reputation as a competent and reliable contractor, with the ability and initiative to solve problems in the field. Over the ensuing years, that reputation has increased commensurate with the growing number of company locations, trained service technicians, and satisfied customers.

SCFTS opened its second location in Bakersfield, CA in 2001.  Plans are on the drawing board to establish a permanent facility in the San Francisco Bay Area to directly service our existing Northwest customers.

Engineered Success

SCFTS repairs and maintains mechanical vapor relief and control equipment on large aboveground storage tanks (AST) and truck loading racks primarily found in oil refineries, fuel terminals, and oil production fields. Such equipment protects tanks by relieving internal tank pressures and vacuums. Defective, poorly maintained or improperly set equipment are a leading source of fugitive emissions to the environment. We also repair and maintain the mechanical gauges that indicate the tank liquid level.

In the early days, many customers hired SCFTS simply to repair and maintain pressure/vacuum relief equipment in response to governmental regulation concerning hydrocarbon fugitive emissions. Today, SCFTS uses a rational engineering approach to demonstrate to customers that proper application and configuration of vapor relief and control equipment has the additional benefit of improving system performance and reducing the long-term cost of ownership.

As a project consultant, SCFTS balances, re-sets, and engineers vapor relief and control systems using American Petroleum Institute (API) Standards. These processes minimize fugitive emissions to the environment and reduce oxygen intrusion into these tanks which lead to the reduced life of the tank and piping via accelerated corrosion.

SCFTS has consistently worked with customers to convince them that regular maintenance “pays” instead of “costs”. With the dramatic recent increase in the cost of crude oil, customers readily accept that concept because fugitive emissions represent a substantial economic loss beyond the pollution that is required to be controlled.

SCFTS has a solid reputation as a safe field contractor. This includes meeting or exceeding current industry and Federal/Cal OSHA safety standards.

The Future Looks Bright for SCFTS

SCFTS has a competent, well-trained, and well-compensated workforce. It is already well-established in its market, and is a strong participant in an important economic sector. All of the major oil companies are already regular customers and more expansion opportunities abound.
